Wind in a Natural and Artificial Wildland Fire Fuel Bed

نویسندگان

چکیده

Fuel beds represent the layer of fuel that typically supports continuous combustion and wildland fire spread. We examine how wind propagates through above loose packed pine needle artificial 3D-printed in a tunnel. Vertical profiles horizontal velocities are measured for three with prescribed porosities two types made long-leaf needles. The dependence mean velocity within bed respect to ambient is linked porosity. Experimental results show significant structure vertical profile flow bed, suggest small-scale sweeps ejections play role this system redistributing momentum similar larger-scale canopy flows.

LANDFIRE: a nationally consistent vegetation, wildland fire, and fuel assessment

LANDFIRE is a 5-year, multipartner project producing consistent and comprehensive maps and data describ ing vegetation, wildland fuel, fire regimes and ecological departure from historical conditions across the United States. It is a shared project between the wildland fire management and research and development programs of the US Depart ment of Agriculture Forest Service and US Department o...

Assimilation of Perimeter Data and Coupling with Fuel Moisture in a Wildland Fire-Atmosphere DDDAS

We present a methodology to change the state of the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the fire spread code SFIRE, based on Rothermel’s formula and the level set method, and with a fuel moisture model. The fire perimeter in the model changes in response to data while the model is running. However, the atmosphere state takes time to develop in response to the forcing by the he...

A wildland fire modeling and visualization environment

We present an overview of a modeling environment, consisting of a coupled atmosphere-wildfire model, utilities for visualization, data processing, and diagnostics, open source software repositories, and a community wiki. The fire model, called SFIRE, is based on a fire-spread model, implemented by the level-set method, and it is coupled with the Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model. A versi...

Acknowledgments Firstly, I want to thank to my colleagues from DACSO. The help given by them always has been very useful. Thanks to Baker and Mónica for her participation in the experiments, and to Xiao for saving me when I was in a tight spot (talking in scientic terms). I also would like to thank to Ana Cortés and Tomàs Margalef for their corrections and guidance. Thank to Emilio Luque for hi...

Public acceptance of wildland fire and fuel management: panel responses in seven locations.

Wildland fire affects both public and private resources throughout the United States. A century of fire suppression has contributed to changing ecological conditions and accumulated fuel loads. Managers have used a variety of approaches to address these conditions and reduce the likelihood of wildland fires that may result in adverse ecological impacts and threaten communities. Public acceptanc...
